HYDRILLA

Hydrilla is an introduced noxious aquatic plant with long, branching stems which often fragment and form large floating mats. Tiny white flowers are produced in the early fall and are less than ¼ inch across. Hydrilla can be differentiated from the similar looking Brazilian elodea or egeria in that hydrilla has sharply toothed leaf margins. Hydrilla feels harsh and brittle when drawn through the hand, while Brazilian elodea will feel quite smooth. Hydrilla spreads rapidly and can grow in up to 30’ of water. Several products can control hydrilla. One of the best is Sonar AS a liquid herbicide or Sonar Q or Sonar PR. These products are generally used to treat the whole pond and should not be used in rapidly flowing water. Another excellent product is Reward that is good for treating around the pond or lake margins. It is often used with Cutrine-Plus for enhanced results particularly where algae is present. For spot treatment of hydrilla, we recommend Aquathol Super K Granular. The liquid products can be applied using a backpack sprayer, hand sprayer or electric sprayer.. The pelletized or granular products can be either hand applied or, for more even application, with our hand held spreader.
