Lyngbya is a Blue-Green algae also known as
Cyanobacteria and is the most troublesome algae. It also forms mats
resembling filamentous algae mats. During warmer months, Lyngbya
mats appear as either floating islands or as broad expanses that
can cover entire ponds or coves. The mats are typically black in
spring but become mottled with patches of black, brown, green and
white filaments later in the season. In addition, extensive bottom
mats exist and persist through all seasons. Portions of these mats
rise to the surface when oxygen becomes trapped and buoys the mat
to the surface. They have a strong musty or earthy odor. This type
of algae is very difficult to get rid of. Repeated applications of
Cutrine-Plus or Captain may work. Hydrothol 191 Granular may be another
option. Pond dye is often helpful. Aeration systems or floating aerators
can help significantly. There is new evidence that applications of
a pond fertilizer may help eliminate Lyngbya.
