MOSQUITO FERN OR AZOLLA

Mosquito Fern or Azolla is a true aquatic fern that is small, branched and floats on the surface. The small overlapping leaves vary in color from red, reddish-purple, reddish-green to green. The stems are branched and covered by the overlapping leaves. The roots, when present, are slender and unbranched. The leaves are arranged alternately in two rows and are two-lobed; the lower lobe is under water. Individual plants are smaller than a dime; however large numbers of plants often cover the pond’s surface giving a distinct reddish color and velvety texture. Control is quite easy with either Reward or Weedtrine-D with Cide-Kick added to the spray mixture for better penetration and coverage of the plants.
