WATERMEAL

Watermeal is the smallest seed plant known. Infestations of millions of these tiny little plants give the appearance of pond scum but a closer look of the plants on the tip of your finger reveals that they are pinhead size plants less than 1/100th of an inch across. The overall appearance is as a light green surface film. Common algaecides WILL NOT control this plant. It must be controlled with either Reward or Sonar AS or, better yet, a combination of both. Control is difficult and can take up to 90 days after application for the watermeal to go away. If small amounts in your pond are not objectionable, it is an extremely valuable food source for ducks, coots and other waterfowl.
